Creamy Lettuce Salad

Creamy Lettuce Salad – A Taste of Home

Some dishes are so simple, so familiar, that you don’t even think of them as a “recipe.” They’re just there – a regular part of everyday life.
This Creamy Lettuce Salad is exactly that. In my childhood home, it showed up at the table almost every day in spring and summer. We always served it with dinner, often alongside potatoes and something warm – and it was always gone in minutes.

My father was a gardener, so we had our own vegetables – fresh, seasonal, and grown with care. We used the most basic kind of lettuce: butterhead lettuce (in Poland, simply sałata masłowa), picked straight from the garden.

If you love Mizeria (Polish cucumber salad with sour cream), you’ll absolutely love this too. It’s creamy, tangy, and incredibly refreshing.

Ingredients:

  • 1 head of butterhead lettuce, washed and torn into pieces
  • 3–4 tablespoons sour cream
  • Salt to taste
  • A splash of white vinegar (the traditional way – that’s how we always made it!)
➤ Or: use fresh lemon juice for a lighter, more modern twist
  • Optional: a pinch of sugar
  • Fresh chopped chives for topping

Here is a short video on preparation of Creamy Lettuce Salad:

Instructions:

  1. Wash the lettuce thoroughly and shake off most of the excess water. Tear it gently with your hands into bite-sized pieces and place in a large bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix sour cream with salt and a splash of vinegar (or lemon juice). Taste and adjust – some people like it more sour, others milder. You can also add a tiny bit of sugar to balance the acidity.
  3. Pour the cream mixture over the lettuce and gently mix.
  4. Top with chopped chives just before serving.

That’s it – nothing fancy, but full of comfort and tradition.

From My Family Table to Yours

This salad reminds me of long, sunny afternoons and simple meals eaten together after a day in the garden. It’s fresh, nostalgic, and so easy to make.

Give it a try – especially if you miss the flavors of a Polish summer.

Final notes

If you try this recipe, let me know how it turned out — or tell me how your family makes Creamy Lettuce Salad. As far as I know, some people add also sugar and make a sweet version of the salad. It’s the same story with Mizeria – in my house it’s always with no sugar:)

Smacznego!
