Baked Fish – A Simple and Delicious Good Friday Recipe
If you’re looking for an easy and flavorful dish to serve on Good Friday, this Baked Buttery Trout recipe is a perfect fit. It’s a light meal, ideal for a meatless Friday lunch or dinner before Easter. The preparation is simple, but the result is wonderfully aromatic and satisfying.

Ingredients:
- 1 whole fish, cleaned (like trout, sea bass, or dorade)
- Salt
- A few slices of butter
- 2 sprigs of fresh dill
- Lemon slices
- Garlic slices
Here is a short video on amaking the Baked Buttery Trout:
Instructions:
- Clean the fish: Scale it and remove the innards, then rinse well under cold water and pat dry with paper towels.
- Salt the fish well—both inside and out.
- Stuff the inside of the fish with a few slices of butter, two sprigs of fresh dill, and a few lemon slices.
- Top the fish with more lemon slices and garlic slices.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for about 30 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork.
This dish pairs beautifully with creamy mashed potatoes. I love serving it with a dollop of sour cream mixed with a bit of horseradish—it adds a zing that complements the fish perfectly.
Other Fasting Meal Ideas:
During Lent, especially on Fridays, I also like to serve:
- Herring in Cream
- Herring in oil with onions
And for the Easter table itself, I highly recommend Herring under the Blanket – a colorful, layered salad that’s always a hit. You can find my version of it here: Herring under the blanket.
Wishing you a peaceful and delicious Easter season!
