Puffed Rice and Caramel Cones (Szyszki)
Szyszki – Caramel Cones, are a nostalgic treat in Poland, especially popular during the PRL (Polish People’s Republic) era when store shelves were often bare, and families made creative desserts with limited ingredients. Szyszki were a special indulgence, made with puffed rice and caramel, using what was available. Today, you can easily make them with canned caramel sauce (kajmak), but traditionally, people would create their own caramel by boiling a can of sweetened condensed milk in water for about two hours. This simple, no-bake treat captures a bit of that vintage charm and is perfect for a quick, sweet bite.

Ingredients:
- 1 can caramel sauce (kajmak, about 400 g, classic or “toffee” flavor)
- 100 g butter
- 100 g puffed rice
Instructions:
- Melting the caramel: In a large pot over low heat, melt the butter and add the caramel sauce, stirring until the mixture is smooth. Be careful not to let it boil, as it may burn. Let cool for 5 minutes.
- Adding the puffed rice: Pour the puffed rice into the caramel mixture and stir until all pieces are well-coated.
- Shaping the cones: When the mixture has slightly cooled, wet your hands and shape small, cone-shaped szyszki. Place them on a baking sheet or plate to cool and firm up.
- Serving: Once completely cooled, the cones are ready to enjoy. Store in a cool place or refrigerator.
