Wafle z kajmakiem, Piszinger
Caramel Wafer Cakes are a classic treat from the PRL era in Poland, a time when stores were often empty, and home cooks had to get creative. In my family, we often made these wafers, but instead of caramel, we used homemade jam since caramel spread was hard to come by. Every summer, my mom would make jars of jam, so wafers layered with a sweet filling were a frequent treat on our table. Whether filled with caramel or jam, they were always delicious.
This simple dessert is known by different names in various parts of Poland. In some regions, it’s called piszinger. No matter what you call them, these wafers are a nostalgic childhood memory and a beloved treat for many.
Here’s a recipe for caramel wafer cakes—perfect for a quick dessert or a sweet snack to go with your coffee.

Caramel Wafer Cake Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 package of dry wafers (5–6 sheets)
- 1 can of caramel spread (kajmak, about 400 g, preferably classic flavor)
- optional: 1 tablespoon of butter (for a creamier texture)
Instructions:
- Prepare the caramel spread: For a creamier consistency, place the caramel spread in a bowl and add 1 tablespoon of softened butter. Beat the mixture with a mixer until smooth and fluffy. I don’t find it necessary;)
- Layering the wafers: Spread a layer of caramel evenly over the first wafer sheet, then cover with another sheet. Repeat the process until all the sheets and caramel are used up.
- Chilling: Gently press down on the finished stack, for example, with a cutting board, and set it aside for about an hour to allow the layers to meld together. You can also refrigerate the wafers for better firmness.
- Serving: Cut the wafers into rectangles or diamonds and serve as a sweet treat.
Tip: If you don’t have ready-made caramel spread, you can make your own by boiling a can of sweetened condensed milk in water for about 2 hours.

I make this, but it is with a cooked chocolate buttercream. Then drizzle melted chocolate over it.
