Polish Cucumber Salad/Mizeria

Polish cucumber salad/Mizeria is one of the most popular and liked side dishes in Poland. The best served with dill or with parsley. I like it this way:)

Many people mention adding sugar to Mizeria. Do you eat it this way too? In my family house it was always with salt and white vinegar. You can use lemon juice instead of lemon if you prefer. My university friend Kasia from Kranystaw (Lublin voivodship) showed me Mizeria with onion added, with no vinegar. It was delcious as well! I invite you to check basic recipe and then experiment with different versions. I will do to- next time I would try Mizeria with sugar:)

Mizeria Polish cucumber salad served on a plate to accompany new potatoes with dill and butter

Ingredients

  • 1 large cucumber
  • 1 tbs vinegar or lemon juice
  • 4 tbs sour cream or thick yogurt
  • salt
  • dill for serving

Peel cucumber and slice it. Add salt, vinegar (or lemon juice) and sour cream (or yogurt), combine. Sprinkle generously with chopped dill.

Serve Polish cucumber salad/Mizeria with main dishes like potatoes and kotlet schabowy (http://cookinpolish.com/pork-chop/) or simmer pork chop (http://cookinpolish.com/simmer-pork-chop-schab-duszony/). It’s delicious just with new potatoes on a hot day too:)

Smacznego!

  8. My family make these differently. My grandmother would heavily salt the cucumbers and leave them for a couple hours to wilt. We would then squeeze them to remove the water. Her sauce was 1 can of evaporated milk plus a tablespoon of vinegar and just a little sugar to make the milk very thick. Everything was packed in a jar and put in the fridge for a day or two to mingle the flavors. Have you ever heard of this? My grandmother said she brought this recipe with her from Poland.
